A while ago they filmed Ramblers Rest and Writers Cottage for 'Escape to the Country'. It will be broadcast on BBC1 at 2:15 on Tuesday 3rd January and will be available on iPlayer for a while after that.

Regrettably we have had to increase the Refundable Bond in case of any damage. (Rock House Farm £100, Writers Cottage £30, other cottages £50). This year we have had two groups stay in Rock House Farm that have each caused over £100 in damage. We stopped their £50 bond but needless to say they ignored our request for a further contribution to the cost of the damage. The vast majority of our guests are fine, and many leave their cottage immaculate. It is just the very small minority who cause the problems. For more details click here.

Guests can use our WiFi broadband for FREE. The range is short, so you will probably have to sit in your car outside our house.

In the next few years we would like to retire completely, so we have put Rock House Estate on the market as a whole as a going concern or in 5 separate lots. We will honour all bookings, so don't be afraid to book.

The North Pennines is a relatively unknown area, but the scenery is fantastic. The Rock House Estate is about 100 acres between Alston & Nenthead.

This is an area for outdoor activities - you can put on your walking boots and walk from the cottage! but there are also lots of places to visit. When you are out and about there are plenty of places to eat ranging from cafes & pubs to excellent restaurants.

We have 5 country cottages ranging from a cosy cottage for 2 up to a farmhouse for 14. For full details about a cottage, just click on the appropriate part of the picture below!

Writers Cottage is a cosy cottage for two with a four-poster bed double bed and a corner jacuzzi bath with a power shower.

Sunrise, which is for four, has a four poster double bed & en-suite bathroom upstairs, and a twin bedroom , shower room and sauna downstairs. There is a large landing upstairs that can take a cot or a folding bed for a child. There is a lounge and kitchen/diner. Outside there is an enclosed garden (ideal for dogs!)

Ramblers Rest sleeps 5 to 7 - it has a double bedroom and a bedroom with 3 single beds. A double sofa bed in the lounge sleeps an extra 2 (there is only 1 bathroom though). Ramblers Rest has the added attraction of a sauna.

Nentside Barn sleeps 5 to 7 - like Ramblers Rest it has a double bedroom, and a bedroom with 3 single beds. A double sofa bed in the lounge sleeps an extra 2 (there is only 1 bathroom though)

Rock House Farm sleeps upto 14. It is a large house with a big lounge and a sitting room. The dining room has a large table that seats 16 & 2 high chairs. Note that there are only 4 bedrooms: a double (with a four-poster bed), and 3 Family Bedrooms each with a double bed and 2 single beds.

Nentside Barn, Ramblers Rest and Writers Cottage are close together and together can sleep up to 16. Nentside Barn has a table that can be extended to seat 16. So for large groups they are a good alternative to Rock House Farm which sleeps 14.

For really large groups, all 5 cottages can sleep up to 34! (+3 cots)

Note that all the cottages have access to the Guest Laundry which has a sink unit, washing machine, tumble dryer, airers, and table top football! (Rock House Farm has its own washing machine and tumble dryer)

We believe in looking after the environment and have joined the Green Tourism Business Scheme. They carry out 'green' audits of businesses grading them bronze, silver, or gold. On our first audit we have achieved a Silver!
